Test

After my review of the new Profoto A1, I thought it would be interesting to see how different settings, angles and modifiers would make the light look. So I set up a Nikon D5 with a Profoto A1 on top and started to take a few test shots.

All the example photos in this post has gone through Lightroom with the same settings. I have applied Camera Standard profile and lens adjustments, and set the colour temperature to 5500K.

This it just a quick test to see the difference in light and output with different modifiers such as the Wide Lens, Dome Diffuser, Bounce Card and the larger Soft Bounce. I guess this post might not be approved by scientists, but maybe interesting to have a quick look at?

[Review] Profoto A1

September 19, 2017 · 8 comments

Profoto A1 is the new camera flash. And off-camera flash. And Air remote. You can use it any way you like. For me as a photographer (mainly portraits) working on-location a lot, this is the piece of equipment I have been waiting for a long time.

So, this might not be the most objective review you have read, but hopefully interesting in some way.

Profoto A1 fits right in beside Profoto B1 and B2. Or as a stand-alone camera mounted flash for events and simpler lighting (mostly). As soon as I have bought my A1, I will probably sell my old Nikon Speedlight.

I borrowed two A1 from Profoto and used them for testing before writing this review, together with accessories that will be sold separately.

Profoto B1X is the new B1, the extremely useful battery powered monolight that I use almost every day. New and improved in B1X is a much brighter modeling light (+80%), a battery with capacity for 100 more flashes at full effect (compared to the old battery), and HSS on the full range, from 2 to 10.

New model and new life for the old one…

Profoto D2 is according to them ”The world’s fastest monolight with TTL” (and with High-Speed Synd I would add). It is a flash with a cord, but that should not stop you from using it outdoor.

I tried it outside our house to see if I could combine freezing movement in a portrait with a nice sunset, without having to use too long depth of field. And it worked just fine.

I tested the new Profoto OCF Color Gel Starter Kit last week and it is finally really easy to use them on the Profoto B1 and B2.

With this small and lightweight solution, I don’t need to fiddle with clamps or duct tape to attach color correction or other gels to my battery flashes any more.

Read my short review to see more of what is in the package and what you can use it for.
