[REVIEW] Profoto B10

September 12, 2018 · 4 comments

Profoto B10 is a Profoto B2 reborn in a smaller Profoto B1 jumpsuit, which means there is now an option for photographers between Profoto A1 and the significantly heavier B1.

I borrowed two Profoto B10 for a week to test how the new studio flash / battery light / on-location flash works (call it whatever you want, but not a speedlight).

Here is my review. In short (but you will be wiser to read the entire review, plus see all the fine example photos), this is precisely the battery powered light that I was missing in Profoto’s ecosystem. Perhaps the one many had wished A1 had been?

Half as long as Profoto B1, half as ”strong” (250Ws compared to 500Ws), less than half as heavy but with very modern technology and features that can be useful.

Then there are of course some small things I would like to fix, but otherwise it’s made for me.

[Review] Profoto A1

Profoto A1 is the new camera flash. And off-camera flash. And Air remote. You can use it any way you like. For me as a photographer (mainly portraits) working on-location a lot, this is the piece of equipment I have been waiting for a long time.

So, this might not be the most objective review you have read, but hopefully interesting in some way.

Profoto A1 fits right in beside Profoto B1 and B2. Or as a stand-alone camera mounted flash for events and simpler lighting (mostly). As soon as I have bought my A1, I will probably sell my old Nikon Speedlight.

I borrowed two A1 from Profoto and used them for testing before writing this review, together with accessories that will be sold separately.

Profoto B1X is the new B1, the extremely useful battery powered monolight that I use almost every day. New and improved in B1X is a much brighter modeling light (+80%), a battery with capacity for 100 more flashes at full effect (compared to the old battery), and HSS on the full range, from 2 to 10.

New model and new life for the old one…

Profoto D2 is according to them ”The world’s fastest monolight with TTL” (and with High-Speed Synd I would add). It is a flash with a cord, but that should not stop you from using it outdoor.

I tried it outside our house to see if I could combine freezing movement in a portrait with a nice sunset, without having to use too long depth of field. And it worked just fine.

I tested the new Profoto OCF Color Gel Starter Kit last week and it is finally really easy to use them on the Profoto B1 and B2.

With this small and lightweight solution, I don’t need to fiddle with clamps or duct tape to attach color correction or other gels to my battery flashes any more.

Read my short review to see more of what is in the package and what you can use it for.
