Clamshell lighting is something I used to do a lot before, then I took a break and almost never used reflectors outdoors. Now I think it is time to bring back that style, as it is gives a very flattering and nice portrait light with very simple equipment.

All you need, in its simplest form, is your main light and a reflector. If you want, you can always switch the reflector to a fill light, but that is maybe not as simple on location as it is in a photo studio.

Shooting portraits on-location is always a gamble. Is the location as good as advertised? How will the available light affect my ideas about using the environment? Will it be worth the extra cost or time to use it? You never really know.

In this case, yes. That light pattern on the wall in the background would have been very hard to create without a very serious budget, but I got it for no extra cost.

Profoto B1X is the new B1, the extremely useful battery powered monolight that I use almost every day. New and improved in B1X is a much brighter modeling light (+80%), a battery with capacity for 100 more flashes at full effect (compared to the old battery), and HSS on the full range, from 2 to 10.

Recently I was hired to shoot portraits for an annual report. They wanted me to visit their clients and have good photos from their business. This example is from an in-door amusement park, and their CEO.

We walked around the place and took portraits here and there, and finally we got to the go-karts. The Art Director wanted photos with a lot of copy space so they could place text on top of the portrait, so I arranged this in front of a black wall.

More lighting, less retouch…

This is Dan Wollgers, a Swedish artist that I got the assignment to shoot some publicity portraits of recently. When the publishing house asked me, I instantly thought of a very simple and clean setup.

Using a large light source as my main light (camera right), and a smaller as fill (camera left) for more contrast in the shadows, it created a portrait that feels like a cover of Wired (which I like).
