Business portrait headshot in photo studio using one Profoto Magnum and rim light

This business portrait is a simple development of the one light Magnum portrait (click link for behind the scenes photos and more) I shot earlier the same day as a test. It uses the same key/main light as before, a Profoto D1 250 Air with a gridded Profoto Magnum reflector from above through a large Chimera panel with diffusion fabric.

I just added another D1 in a medium sized softbox (2×3 feet or 60×90 cm) placed near the background half way behind the bookend so the effective size of the light is more of a strip softbox.

One light portrait in photo studio using Profoto D1 and a Magnum reflector

Before helping some executives with business portraits in my studio the other day, I had the chance to experiment with a one light setup using only a Profoto Magnum reflector shot through a Chimera panel with diffusion fabric.

Luckily, Fripp, a guy I share office with, walked by and I didn’t have to use myself as a test dummy setting the lights right. It makes all the difference to have someone other that yourself to test different setups on (after a while, all the boring test shots I have of myself looks almost the same and it is hard to create something new).

This is just a unretouched photo from a project I am working on at the moment, sooner or later it will end up in a book with patterns so anyone with skill and patience can make these cookies (and cakes, and ice creams etc).

My job is to make the stuff look good, and it has been really fun to work with the lighting and setups to achieve that.

Some of my assignments are for magazines and newsletters, and they mostly consists of  “go there and there, take a portrait of him and her, and send us the picture soon”. In this case it was two people working at a animals hospital together with their latest addition, a X-ray computed tomography machine.

Hearing that I would take photos inside a hospital made me think twice about going there with just my D700 and a Speedlight (which I mostly do otherwise) together with some lenses.

Instead I also packed a light stand, my Profoto AcuteB 600R, a PocketWizard, some ND-filter and duct tape.

Bare bulb photo studio portrait (Profoto 250 Air)

This is the result of a portrait studio session I had a couple of weeks ago with a duo writing and illustrating a book about aliens and UFOs. My main goal was to produce some images with a lot of crazy colours and for that I tried a four light setup (test image here). More on those photos later.

I have found that most clients (in this case a publishing house) likes to get portraits in a couple of different styles if possible, so they can use one type on their web site, another on the blog or Facebook etc.

And why not? To create this simple group portrait, I just had to turn off all the lights except one which I removed the reflector from, and switch from a black background to a white.
